Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Ireland’s Open Show
1st March 2009
Firstly, I would like to thank the Officers and Committee of the Club for inviting me to judge the Club Open Show. Thank you, also, to all the exhibitors who turned out on the day and to those who phoned me to let me know that they could not attend – some of this due to the change of date, I was delighted with your good wishes to me.
I would like to make a few general comments about the dogs on the day. Mouths, ear settings and tails were all very good – not one bad mouth. I did not make a comment on every dog regarding all of these points. Just a few dogs lacked good presentation, this was not mentioned in their critique but I think they will know themselves, this would have gone against the dog. There were at least four dogs who were quite shy – looked at me from the corner of their eye – to those people I would say attend ring craft training, it’s a great help for you and your dogs.
I enjoyed my day very much and I was delighted with my entry of 44 dogs, thanks again to all of you.
Lyla Hanlon (Lyjon)
Puppy Dog (3, 0)
1st Murphy’s Kinelarty Ben Lyting the Way
Nice 7 ½ month old dog, overall conformation good, nice head, expression pleasing, bite good, level topline. Moved nicely, with confidence. Reserve Best Puppy in Show
2nd Bermingham’s Carraigbern Red Emperor
This pup has great bone, 6 ¾ months old. Would have liked a little more height, even at this age. Moved with ease, beautiful markings, presentation perfect.
3rd Donlon’s Main Man of the Gang
Junior Dog (3, 1)
1st Barnes’s Bernemcourt Il Colosso
Very nice 13 month old dog. Well presented, good expression, outgoing, moved well. Needs time to mature and fill into body.
Intermediate Dog (3, 1)
1st Giffney’s Glenia Bossy Bear
19 month old boy. Nice type, good bone and breadth throughout. Coat excellent, strong masculine head. Eyes a little loose. Level topline, nice on the move but a little close at rear, will improve with time.
2nd O’Flynn’s Starting Here Sweetest Thing
21 month old dog, medium sized. Dark eye, broad head, stood with level topline, a little shy on the day (may have been the indoor ring). Moved correctly, needs plenty of ring craft to help with shyness. Keep him out.
Open Dog (10, 7)
1st Tull’s Stagestruck at Brogholme J.D.
Very appealing overall shape to this 3 ½ year old dog, nice deep chest and broad front. Topline a little dippy, correctly shaped rump. Covered the ground well on the move. Reserve Best Dog
2nd Benson’s Jnr Ch Kinelarty Maxime Dynamite at Bernervalley
22 month old lovely dog with good bone, great breadth, medium sized, good proportions. Nice type, well marked, moved well but a little wide at elbow, time will improve.
3rd Giffney’s Flurry Knox
Champion Dog (1, 0)
1st Benson’s Ch Kinelarty Midnight Star Gaze at Bernervalley
What a beautiful strong, masculine head on this dog. Just over 3 years old. Good deep chest, well angulated shoulders, moved with balance and drive but a little close moving away. Best Dog and Best of Breed
Puppy Bitch (4, 1)
1st Hughes’s Carraigbern Alpine Princess
8 months old, striking young bitch. Good markings and coat, moved well and held topline. Showed well. One to watch for the future. Best Puppy in Show
2nd Sumstad’s Carraigbern Morning Jewel
Litter sister to above, just as nice, may give her sister a run for her money. Well presented.
3rd Brady’s Carraigbern Pearl Drift
Junior Bitch (1, 0)
1st Dunne’s Lexy Lily of the Valley
Very nice compact 10 month old bitch, good markings, well angled front and rear, level topline. Improving all the time. Great confidence. Reserve Best Bitch
Intermediate Bitch (1,0)
1st O’Flynn’s Princess of the Land
Nice type bitch, 21 months old, pleasing overall shape, good sized bitch. Not so happy in the ring which affected her movement. Would benefit in a little more ring craft training as would handler. Should do well in the future.
Open Bitch (11, 10)
1st Bermingham’s Castlepook Planters Daughter
This bitch has improved since first I saw her, now 3 years old, still a little shy which takes away from her overall look and movement. Keep her out, she should improve.
Champion Bitch (4, 1)
1st Hughes’s Ch, Int Ch Carraigbern Miss Alice CW’08
This 4 year old bitch is a joy to look at, lovely head and expression, good angulation which showed on the move. Well presented, good level topline. Everything about her is nice, just a little into herself on the day. Best Bitch and Reserve Best in Show
2nd Murphy’s Ch Kinelarty Star of County Down JCW
Very nice 3 year old girl, nicely marked and presented in excellent condition. Nice eye and good topline. Moved with ease, little between her and 1st place winner.
3rd Murphy’s Ch Kinelarty Hope and Glory CW
Veteran Bitch
1st Murphy’s Ballymana Begonia
At 8 years old, this bitch could move, a little wide in front, again presented in good condition. Pleasing overall shape, held a good topline on the move. Best Veteran
